What is the goal of the test?
The goal of the test is to measure how well candidates can listen, understand, and interpret the language from English (source) to their working (target) language. Each test includes questions that are designed to determine the proficiency level of the candidate in the language, in medical terminology, and common vocabulary in the medical profession.
Who needs to be tested?
Understanding one’s level of proficiency is one of the most important variables that can aid in sort listing or hiring an interpreter. Think of the test results as a quality management system (QMS) which ensures that the interpreter’s work is appropriate and meets high standards. Our proficiency testing is a way to assess that the interpreter has attained an adequate level of qualification. Who should be tested?
- Anyone who is interested becoming a medical interpreter.
- Any language service company providing service in healthcare.
- Recruiters and employment agencies who are looking to hire qualified medical
interpreters. - Any managers who are responsible of quality control can have the interpreters take this
test when their language proficiency is in question.
How many languages are the test currently available in?
We currently offer tests in 16 different languages. We plan to increase the number of tests we offer based on the number of requests we receive.
How do I schedule a test?
You do not need to schedule a test. Simply click on our Take a test page and select the language you wish to test in. After making a payment you will be directed to our test page.
What is the time allowed for the test?
Time allotted for each test is 30 minutes.

Each test comprises of 4 sections.

How much does a test cost?
Each test is priced at $99. You can take our sample tests for FREE.
How do I receive my score?
You will receive your score instantly at the end of your test. Additionally, your score will be emailed to you.
How do I interpret my score?
- Score 69 or Lower - Elementary/Limited working proficiency – Beginner
- 70 - 79 - Professional working proficiency -Transitional
- 80 - 94 - Full professional proficiency – Competent
- 95 - 100 - Native/Bilingual proficiency – Outstanding
How many questions are in a test?
There are 85 questions. The test carries 100 points.
- Section A: Listening - 15 questions, each worth 2 points
- Section B: Medical terminologies and abbreviations - 30 questions, each worth 1 point
- Section C: Language translation - 30 questions, each worth 1 point
- Section D: Code and ethics standard - 10 questions, each worth 1 point.
How do I prepare for this test?
The test questions are designed around your course materials in the 40/60 hours of Community/Medical Interpretating Course along with any material related to US Healthcare, laws and regulations, Codes of Ethics and standards of practice, common medical terminology and abbreviations. Having knowledge of common disease names, treatment and diagnosis is a plus.
What is the validity this test?
Normally language proficiency tests are expected to be taken every year to meet the changing demands; but it also depends upon the organization you are working for. You can always retake this test at your own to self evaluate your language proficiency or prove your proficiency level if you are applying for a job.
